AI Cat and Mouse

My niece just sent me an article from BuzzFeed titled Teachers Are Absolutely Loving The Student Who Made A Tool That Shows If Your Essay Was Written By AI. So continues the cat and mouse game between teachers and learners in the name of academic integrity. The article is an interesting read about Edward Tian, a Princeton University student, who created a tool to detect writing generated by ChatGPT. Other efforts to foil AI are also highlighted, including links to a piece in Chalkbeat about New York City public schools blocking ChatGPT access and an article in The Verge about an AI conference banning conference proposals generated by AI.

As I noted yesterday, we’re clearly at a point where we need to have serious conversations around the rules (and ethics) of using AI to support the production of what we deem our “original” output. However, I’m not sure these attempts help in that effort. Again, interesting times!
