I have been having a world of trouble getting my hands on SPSS software (from problems
finding an online retailer who would accept my academic verification
as a new ODU student to problems with the software being on backorder
after I was told it shipped). In desperation, I went to the SPSS
corporate site and did a search under “SPSS grad pack” and found a link
to an authorized online vendor where you can obtain a download of the
most current version of the software (v16) under either a 6 or 12 month
“rental agreement” – note that you are renting a license of the product versus purchasing it.

chose the 6 month rental for $79 which can be renewed at the same rate.
I was able to obtain the necessary academic verification by simply
using my ODU.edu e-mail account. The entire process from registering on
the site to installing and setting up the software took about 20
minutes. I just tested my install and it works like a charm!!! Given
the way software is so frequently updated, I think renting a license
might be a nice alternative to buying the software – plus I had the
software downloaded and installed in less than 30 minutes!!
